OEMA Newsletter
An Electronic Newsletter
of The Oregon Educational Media Association
Volume 14 No. 4 February , 2002
FROM THE EDITOR
The OEMA Newsletter is now being published on the
fifth of the month during the school year, September through May.
One of the major reasons for this change is to make it easier for
you to read it because it will no longer have to be sent in 2 parts.
Another factor is to send news which isn't almost 2 months old.
Please send any comments to Sheryl Steinke, OEMA Newsletter Editor.
BOARD HI-LITES from Linda
Ague
The OEMA Board met in President Jeri Petzel's wonderful
new library on January 26. Once we learned to trust the semi-rocking
nature of her plush chairs we focused on the following highlights:
- 2002 OEMA/WLMA joint conference - Libraries without boundaries:
You better sign up early for this major media event! Lois Lowry,
Jacqueline Woodson and Graham Salisbury are only a few of the
authors. Mike Eisenberg, Jamie McKenzie and Doug Johnson will
also present. It is a guaranteed good time.
- Vailey Oehlke and Mary Bush from the Multnomah Public Library
shared their findings from an LSTA funded study to improve cooperation
between the school and public libraries in their county. They
found that many of the school libraries were in dire straights
(as if we didn't know) and that one of the most powerful things
they could do is advocate for better school library collections
managed by certified librarians. They are continuing to examine
various cooperative models and will share best practices as they
find them.
- The 2001 Conference chair, Kathy Jenson reported that we actually
made between $15,000 and $20,000. It turns out that collecting
on the purchase orders from various school districts may be the
most difficult part of the treasurer's job.
- State Librarian Jim Sheppke said we can ask the legislature
for anything as long as it doesn't cost any money, so we will
ask that they make sure the kind of data we need to accurately
evaluate the state of our libraries is being gathered with all
the other data. Then we can wow them with statistics next legislative
day which, by the way, is May 7.
- Steve Baker from Follett is offering to analyze the collections
from a sample of schools in Oregon to gather data about the age
of the collections. This information used with the Oregon Study
could present a powerful argument for the need to care for our
school libraries. They would do this free of charge so of course
we all tried to one up each other to get on the list. Eligible
schools would have to meet certain criteria like having useable
MARC records for their books. More on this later.
- All you web designers out there - Bob Zybach is ready to give
away prize money to school projects for well designed environmental
web sites. For more details check the Oregon
Watersheds and Websites Project site or contact Bob Zybach.
- From the great windows in the new library, we could see big
snow flakes falling and even though Jim Hayden made fun of us
for being weenies, we adjourned early. For more details, watch
the OEMA website.

BEVERLY CLEARY CHILDREN'S CHOICE AWARD
Jann Tankeresley reports that Mrs. Cleary has agreed to allow OEMA
to name our new award the "Beverly Cleary Children's Choice
Award" in her honor. This award is currently being developed
and will hopefully be awarded for the first time in Spring of 2003.
It is modelled after the Young Reader's Choice Award, but will target
books at the 2-3rd grade reading level, both chapter books and nonfiction.
The first list of nominated books should be ready this spring, and
the contest will run during the 2002-03 school year.
If you are interested in helping to select the books that will be
on the first list of nominations, you are invited to reply to Jann Tankersley. If you are interested
in nominating books to be on the list, please send those titles
as well. The committee will begin publicizing the award before the
end of the year. Send nominations to Jann by Feb. 15.

2002 OEMA WLMA JOINT CONFERENCE CALL FOR
PROPOSALS
Have you thought about presenting at fall conference and just not
gotten around to proposing? Can you suggest a session?
Our concurrent session chair, Janet Lockwood, is looking for a few more
good men and women presenters for the 2002 Joint conference of OEMA
and WLMA, scheduled for the Doubletree Hotels at Jantzen Beach in
Portland on October 10-12, 2002.
Potential presenters (and anyone who would like to suggest a presenter)
need merely complete a simple form
with title of presentation category and interest level. The tough
things such as description and equipment needed come later after
session is accepted.
ANNE FRANK EXHIBIT IN PORTLAND
The traveling exhibit, "Anne Frank: A History for Today,"
will be in Portland April 8 through May 5; the free exhibit will
be open to the public daily within Lloyd Center. Portland is the
only West Coast city featuring this international exhibition.
OREGON REFERENCE LINK
Remember LINK, Oregon Reference LINK, that is...your friendly and
FREE reference service. There are 5 LINK centers around the state
to serve you. Check here for an
online request form for your area.

Museum and Library Services, administered by the Oregon State Library.
TEENS RELY MORE ON INTERNET THAN LIBRARY
FOR RESEARCH
According to a recent survey reported in the Internet and Education
Report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project in Washington,
teenagers now rely more on the Internet than the library for research.
While 94 percent of online youth use the Internet for school research,
about 28 percent of those who have been online more than three years
know people who have used the Web to cheat on a school paper or
test, according to Pew. John Barrie, founder of Turnitin.com, an
online service that checks student papers against Web material,
estimates 30 percent of papers received are unoriginal and 75 percent
of that work is copied off the Web.
GRAPEVINE
Patty Sorensen, Middleton Elementary Media Specialist, in
Sherwood; and Gregory Lum, Astoria High School Media Specialist,
are two recipients of the Ezra Jack Keats
Foundation mini-grants.
Jim Tindall is about to air his latest radio play, Manser
and Dolph: Mid-Columbian Men of Art, a dialogue between the prolific
regionalist naturalist painter Percy Manser (1886-1973) and the
first director of Maryhill Museum, Clifford Dolph (1901-1979). Set
in July, 1954 the two men talk art, politics, and contemporary entertainment
as they take in the grand view of the Columbia River Gorge at Wishram
above Celilo Falls. The play will air in the spring on KIHR, Hood
River.
OEMA member Janet Murray spoke to a symposium of Japanese
librarians and library educators at the University of Tokyo on Saturday,
January 26th. The Japanese government has only recently begun to
install Internet access in the schools and has mandated the addition
of school librarians by 2003. American-educated Japanese librarians
have proposed a continuing education curriculum to help their peers
implement an information literacy focus. They asked Janet to inspire
their audience with her experience "Pioneering Technology in
the School Library." The slide show she delivered is available
on her web page: http://www.surfline.ne.jp/janetm. Remarkably, one
of the attendees came up to Janet after the presentation to remind
her that she and others from her school had visited Wilson High
School's library ten years ago!
As of January 1, 2002, Jim Brown is the World Book Regional
Schoo/Library Director for all of Oregon, Northern California, and
Southern Idaho. This is basically the same position that Darrell
Thompson has, but he now covers Washington, Alaska, Montana, and
Northern Idaho.
