FROM THE PRESIDENT --- Merrie Olson

I trust that you are all organized, have your Banned Book display up and are relaxing, maybe enough sipping a cup of tea and thinking about the great fall conference coming up. Ya right! Well join the rest of us who are still trying to weed through the pile of new books, teaching library orientation to all freshman, setting up student assistant schedules, or pulling resources for that teacher who just this morning came in requesting help!

In this year of national elections, political candidates, and the democratic process, we pause to think about the leadership in libraries and what better place to be than at the OASL/WLMA Joint Fall Conference. The conference is less than a week away. If you have not signed up yet please go to http://oemawlma2008.org, click the register button in the right hand column to register online. I know there will be something of interest for everyone. Can you believe Frank McCourt will be the banquet speaker? As well as authors John Green, Pete Hautman, Nina laden, Naomi Shihab Nye, Todd Strasser, Kevin Hawkes, and Justina Chen Headley and more! You will come away with lots of leader opportunities by countless concurrent sessions and extended sessions. So my mission to you is to go forth and be a leader.

Merrie Olson

1. Interchange Winter ---- Carol Dinges

The winter issue of The Interchange will be all about Oregon Reads. How are you promoting (or planning to promote) Oregon Reads in your school, district or community? Send me a paragraph or two (to carol.dinges@lebanon.k12.or.us), and I'll compile them into an article that will hopefully inspire others to take part in celebrating Oregon's sesquicentennial and literary heritage, as well.

2. 2008 OASL WLMA Fall Conference ---- Sheryl Steinke

Great conversations and sessions await you at this joint OASL WLMA Fall Conference at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Join with our fellow school librarians from Washington for sessions from national presenters and acclaimed authors. The Multnomah County Library is Portland is planning an exhibit of illustrations, books, and paper toys created by Berta and Elmer Hader during the heyday of children s publishing in the nineteen hundreds. In planning this exhibit, we of the Hader Connections (the Haders niece Joy Hoerner Rich; Sybilla Cook and Karen Tolley) wonder how many of the Hader books still survived In Oregon school libraries.
